Granite is strong, dark and unyielding; the inspiration for this vigorous, earthy coffee with a very full body and deep aroma. Muskoka lies within the Canadian Shield, composed of some of earth’s oldest rock – granite and gneiss – dating to the Precambrian era of 4.5 billion and 540 million years ago. Originally, the region was mountainous with some volcanic activity, but over the millennia erosion and glaciers combined to expose the granite that was once far below the earth’s surface. Now, 15, 000 years after the end of the last ice age, Muskoka and the Canadian Shield is covered by a thick forest, interspersed by thousands of lakes and the thinnest of soil layers. It wasn’t the best recipe for the farming pioneers who arrived in the late 1800’s, but it is hard to beat as a vacation paradise!
